It’s summertime in Florida, which means it’s extra hot and rainy! If you’re looking for something fun to do that doesn’t require you to be outside in Southwest Florida, you’re in luck. Although this area is known for its beaches and outdoor activities, there is plenty to do indoors all around the area. For this blog post, we wanted to focus on one particular activity: visiting a museum. There are quite a few museums in Cape Coral and surrounding towns in Southwest Florida; there is a lot of history and culture down here. These museums can appeal to a variety of different ages and interests.
When the weather isn’t ideal, head out with your loved ones for an exciting, knowledge-filled adventure at one of Southwest Florida’s museums. Below, we’ve shared some of the best museums in the area for you to check out.
Cape Coral Historical Museum | 544 Cultural Park Blvd., Cape Coral, Fl
Exhibit Tours: Wednesday and Thursday, 1 to 4 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Office and Gift Shop Hours: Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets: $5 for adults; $2 for children; members are free This museum preserves the rich history of Cape Coral. There are three buildings. As a visitor, you can either do a self-guided tour, or be guided by a docent. The Rosen Building houses offices, the gift shop, and a reference library; the Gulf American Building is a replica sales room and features several exhibits; and the Kelly Building has exhibits about the Calusa and Seminole tribes, and the history of Cape Coral.
Southwest Florida Military Museum & Library | 4820 Leonard St., Cape Coral, Fl
The museum hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. The mission of this museum is to honor soldiers, preserve military history, and educate on military service and sacrifice. Throughout the museum, visitors will see artifacts from the Revolutionary War to Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. The museum also has military-related souvenirs for visitors.
Edison & Ford Winter Estates | 2350 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers, Fl
The museum’s hours: Monday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets: Prices vary depending on package deal chosen. For a complete estates tour: $20 for adults; $11 for children ages 6 to 12; children 5 and under are free. The Estates are the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. The two were good friends; Ford bought the property next door to Edison. The property is surrounded by more than 20 acres of botanical gardens and include nine historic buildings. The buildings house inventions, artifacts and special exhibits.
Railroad Museum of South Florida | 7330 Gladiolus Dr, Fort Myers, Fl
This museum is open daily, but from August through October the museum is open only Friday through Sunday. Hours are: Friday, 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 3:45 p.m. In the museum, there are several locomotives, and rail tracks. There is a move theater inside that shows educational train-related videos, and a gift shop. Train rides leave every 20 to 30 minutes.
