Thinking about buying a home? This is an exciting time in your life – a major life event. Although, with the excitement, can come stress.  There’s a process to buying a home with a lot of moving parts, and at times, everything can seem overwhelming.

As seasoned realtors in southwest Florida, we have helped our share of homebuyers. We know the process like the back of our hands, so we know how to help you every step of the way – from home searches to walk-throughs to signing papers.

When buying a home, there’s a lot to think about and a lot to question. How many bedrooms do you need? What is the neighborhood like? Are the schools good? Is there a hospital nearby? How big of a garage do I need? Is a pool necessary? What’s my budget? How flexible is my budget? When am I able to move? Etc. Etc.

For this article, we wanted to share some things for you to think about when looking for a home to buy. It can be easy to forget things when you’re trying to think of and do so much. Whether this is your first time buying a home or your forth time, we bet this list can help you!

  • Save as much money as you can. You want to have as much cash as you can for the down payment, closing costs, insurance, escrow, taxes, and more.

  • Figure out what price range you can afford. Search for online mortgage calculators. Your best bet may be to work with a financial advisor.

  • Work on improving your credit score. With a higher credit score, your interest rate will be lower with a mortgage.

  • Don’t just take the first mortgage rate you get offered – shop around and try to get the best deal. Visit  www.floridahousing.org or www.rd.usda.gov to find lower-interest mortgages.

  • Write down all the things you want (or don’t want) in a home. Decide which things are the most important to you and what things are deal-breakers.

  • Search for a realtor – you want a realtor that knows the area, he/she can tell you a lot about the who, what, when, where, and why about the town.

  • Go house hunting, take pictures, and write down the pros and cons of each home.

  • Make an offer on a home you love.

  • If the offer is accepted, schedule a home inspection, followed by a final walk-through.

  • If the walk-through and inspection go well, close on the house.
